In ancient Egypt, baboons and monkeys played a significant and mysterious role in religion, and some of the earliest deities were depicted with baboon heads.  The Sacred Baboon was an attendant of Thoth, the creator god who was credited with the foundation of law, the advancement of learning, and the invention of hieroglyphic writing.
