Handwoven Reed Red Barn Owl Mask

Reeds woven by hand form the barn owl shape of this Red Barn Owl Mask, which measures 8 by 7 inches (20 by 18 cm) and weighs 3 ounces (85 g).

In Panama, a bundle of reed is wrapped and stitched into a continuous spiral, called coil weaving, using a silk stitch or a rib stitch. Natural dyes color the reeds, and each mask is made individually, so no two match.

Hung on a wall, a mask works as a single statement piece. Grouped, several create visual rhythm. Entryways, studios, hallways, and seasonal arrangements all suit them.
