The visual layout of certain art and decor pieces draws us in by decreasing threat monitoring in the vHPC and BLA circuit, responsible for spatial safety evaluation (Silva & Girardeau, 2026). Designs that feel safe, like those with soft shapes and deep layers, are comforting because they reduce brain activity and help us feel more secure in our surroundings, (Silva & Girardeau, 2026; Kong et al., 2021). “Refuge” qualities such as curved silhouettes, inward contours, and layered depth feel cozy because they decrease BLA activation and stabilize spatial encoding in the vHPC (Kong et al., 2021). Together, these elements foster a peaceful, subdued visual experience, which may explain the human inclination toward objects that offer both openness and a sense of enclosure.
