Amethyst with Calcite Crystal Inclusions Geode Sculpture

Amethyst crystals with calcite inclusions fill this geode, which measures 4.5 by 4 by 5 inches (11 by 10 by 13 cm) and weighs 3.7 pounds (1,670 g).

Gas bubbles trapped in cooling basalt lava left round cavities in the rock, and those cavities became the geode. Silica-rich water seeped in and deposited quartz crystals on the walls, which grew into amethyst. Calcite, a softer mineral that is white to pale in color, crystallized among them. The filled cavity is the shape the bubble once had. Geodes like this one come from Brazil.

On a desk or shelf, the crystal-lined opening faces whichever direction you place it.

The way certain art and decor elements are visually arranged draws us in by decreasing threat monitoring in the vHPC and BLA circuit, which evaluates spatial safety (Silva & Girardeau, 2026). Curved shapes and deep layers are comforting because they reduce brain activity and support a sense of security in our surroundings (Silva & Girardeau, 2026; Kong et al., 2021). “Refuge” qualities such as curved silhouettes, inward contours, and layered depth decrease BLA activation and stabilize spatial encoding in the vHPC (Kong et al., 2021). Together, these elements foster a peaceful, subdued visual experience, which may explain the human inclination toward objects that offer both openness and a sense of enclosure.
