A 27-bead mala of 8 mm Red Jasper, Hematite, and Smoky Quartz, anchored by a 12 x 18 mm Rhodonite guru bead. Each bead is hand-knotted on brown C-Lon thread. It is finished with a 1.25-inch silky deep red tassel and silver-plated accent beads. Four rounds of the 27 beads make a traditional 108 count.
Moving from bead to bead around the 27-bead mala sets a steady count, and the guru stone marks the end of each round. Rhythmic regulation profiles use repetitive, predictable, and continuously recurring motor patterns to maintain attentional engagement, and benefit from the consistency, cadence, and predictability of repeated physical actions (Nakamura & Csikszentmihalyi, 2002). A mala that is counted bead by bead over 27 beads best fits the preference for repetitive hand motions and predictable movement patterns. Repetitive activities often contain the conditions associated with flow states, including sustained attention, clear procedural structure, and immediate sensory feedback (Nakamura & Csikszentmihalyi, 2002).
